The Venus was carring grindstones when she was caught in a storm and foundered on Black River shoal. She lightened her load by dropping some massive square stones overboard (SW of her wreck in about 3-4 ft of water.) She was then floated off the shoal and made it about an eighth of a mile before she finnally sank. Major repairs were done in 1880 after she stranded in Lake Michigan near North Manitou Island.
