ACTIVITIES Summer activities include the Michigan Brown Trout Festival in mid July, which fills the Alpena City Marina for its two-week duration. In early June Alpena celebrates it's River Fest and the July 4 celbrations include a canoe race down the Thunder Bay River. Mid August brings the Tall Ships Festival where attendies can visit some floating examples of sailing vessels found at the bottom of Thunder Bay. The Michigan Lighthouse Festival in mid October which offers boat, plane and helicopter tours of local lighthouses and closing the years nautical festivities. Rogers City (34 miles north) and Harrisville (35 miles south) both have Salmon derbies during the Summer. Alpena offers a small rural community with unique cultural resources not found in cities 5 times its size. Among these are the Jesse Besser Museum and planetarium (the only planetarium found north of Flint), Thunder Bay Theater (a professional year round theater group), and Alpena Civic Theater, an amateur local theater. |
